At Michigan Bicycle Law, we don’t just represent injured cyclists – we support the organizations building a safer, stronger cycling community across Michigan.

One of those organizations is the Ann Arbor Velo Club, a long-standing cornerstone of the Ann Arbor cycling scene that continues to shape riders of all skill levels through structured training, competitive opportunities, and a deeply rooted sense of community.

Building a Foundation for Michigan Cyclists

Founded in the mid-1970s, the Ann Arbor Velo Club (AAVC) began as a small group of dedicated road cyclists. Today, it has evolved into one of Michigan’s most active and respected cycling clubs, offering programming that spans road racing, gravel, and cyclocross.

The club’s mission is simple but impactful: to develop cycling skills, promote fitness, and foster a welcoming environment where riders can grow – whether they are just getting started or competing at a high level.

What sets AAVC apart is its commitment to accessibility. The club creates opportunities for riders at every stage, helping build confidence, improve technique, and connect cyclists across the region.

Programs, Races, and Skill Development

The Ann Arbor Velo Club offers a range of programs and events designed to help cyclists build skills and confidence at every level:

  • Spring Training Series: A mix of clinics and practice races focused on group riding, bike handling, and race fundamentals
  • CXpreX Cyclocross Clinics: Hands-on sessions that teach off-road techniques, obstacle navigation, and technical bike control
  • The Watermoo: A challenging gravel event that takes riders across scenic and demanding Michigan backroads
  • Vets Park Cyclocross: A fast-paced, technical fall race that tests skill, endurance, and bike handling

Together, these programs create accessible entry points for new riders while giving experienced cyclists opportunities to refine their abilities and stay engaged in the sport.

Building Community and Strengthening Michigan Cycling

Beyond training and racing, the Ann Arbor Velo Club plays an important role in strengthening Michigan’s cycling community. Riders often come for structured programs but stay for the connections, mentorship, and shared passion that define the club. By creating a welcoming environment for beginners and meaningful opportunities for experienced cyclists to give back, AAVC helps grow participation while promoting safer, more confident riding. This combination of skill development and community building contributes to a stronger, more connected cycling culture across the state.

Supporting Competitive Cycling – And Protecting Riders

Events like the Spring Training Series, Watermoo, and Vets Park Cyclocross help riders grow stronger and more confident. But even experienced cyclists can be vulnerable to distracted drivers, unsafe road conditions, and preventable crashes.
